Rachel’s Story – Life at Nexa with Rachel Garton

Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Rachel Garton.

Meet the consultant…

Rachel is a highly experienced commercial and property litigation solicitor, working for both landlords and tenants. She has a niche specialism in service charge litigation and has just published a book on the topic. At the moment her practice is heavily focused on possession work for property owners and landlords.

Here’s what she had to say:

I’ve been a solicitor since 2007 having done my training and then spent 15 years at Gosschalks Solicitors in Hull, the last 8 years as a partner. I did all kinds of commercial and residential property litigation, starting off mainly doing work for pub companies and then expanding to also specialise in residential landlord and tenant.

I felt like it was time for a change and the idea of legal consultancy was attractive; I liked the idea of having more of a work/life balance such as the flexibility to work around school runs and other commitments.

Nexa were incredibly responsive and efficient when I first contacted them and once I started talking to them I was really reassured by how approachable everyone seemed. They genuinely want to do everything they can to support their consultants and help them succeed.

Nexa made the transition from my old firm really painless; they helped a lot with the transfer of files and the friendly and easy to manage training I received helped me feel right at home very quickly!

On the work side, being a consultant has enabled me to focus on the more specialised areas that interest me and given me the freedom to take on clients and matters that I want to.

I’m having a baby at the end of the year and Nexa have offered me various support while I’m on maternity leave to ensure my clients carry on getting the services they need, which is a great help.

For anyone thinking of making the change and becoming a consultant I would say, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day!’ Give yourself time – and make financial plans accordingly- to build up your client base. Don’t panic if it takes longer than you would like.

The flexibility of working this way is really refreshing and there is a truly positive effect on your work/life balance.”
