Donna’s Story – Life at Nexa with Donna Taylor

Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Donna Taylor.

Meet the consultant…

Donna is an experienced private client solicitor dealing with wills, probate and trusts. Here’s what she had to say:

I ran my own firm for 7 years before amalgamating with a larger firm working across Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk, and I become a partner there.

But I was looking for a new way to do the job I love.  I realised that the traditional way of going to the office day in day out, together with the targets and office politics never really suited me, but it became less tolerable as I tried to balance my family life and work. I found that the expectations, for example of dressing in a certain way, and being accessible at all times, just weren’t me.

As soon as I spoke to Matt Dunne at Nexa I felt at home and that feeling of belonging has just grown.  The relationship I have with the management of Nexa and the other consultants is very different to any I have previously experienced in traditional, partner-led firms.

There is a highly supportive network here – both fellow consultants and management. I can tap into a whole range of experience and talent whenever I need to, which means I can help my clients in the best way possible and deliver a high-quality service to them.

The freedom of being able to do my job at a time and place that suits me is liberating, as is working with solicitors who have a similar outlook in life to me.

It’s not just the flexibility to be able to do the everyday things like the school run, helping on the PTA or going for a coffee with friends – without “making up the time”, but also being able to devote time to meatier projects like taking a seat on the Law Society Council or setting up a charity that are really life enhancing.

This autonomy has really improved my well-being – my career, my life, my way!

To anyone thinking of becoming a self-employed consultant solicitor I would say: invest time in building relationships. I spent years networking with financial advisors, accountants and others and it has paid off – I do not need to search for work, all my work comes from referrals.

Secondly, believe in yourself. The support mechanisms are in place at Nexa to help you succeed. It won’t always be easy, but the help is there when you need it.”
