Anushka’s Story – Life at Nexa with Anushka Dosanjh
Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Anushka Dosanjh.
Meet the consultant…
Anushka is an experienced property and finance solicitor who previously worked in the City for many years advising on large scale commercial real estate transactions. Today she advises on a varied range of acquisitions, disposals, restructuring, refinancing and management matters (freehold, leasehold, residential and commercial).
Here’s what she had to say:
“I started out working for a variety of firms in the City: Watson Farley & Williams, Dentons and Maclay, Murray & Spens, doing varied and interesting commercial real estate transactions. I was part of Peregrine Law when it merged with Nexa and I was happy to move across to join Nexa which was looking to grow and invest in its people. It felt like an exciting opportunity to be part of something fresh, modern and, back then, a bit different.
Although it’s not set up like a traditional law firm – Nexa’s consultants are spread all over the country – I feel that it has taken all the best bits of such entities and successfully replicated them, so it feels like a lot more than just a “platform”. For example, there is a lot of support and collaboration between the consultants, the back-office operations team are amazingly efficient and really help us all function on a day-to-day basis and the leadership is very approachable and forward thinking.
For those solicitors contemplating self-employment I would say, think carefully about the reason you want to do it. There is a huge amount of flexibility and power in being your own boss, but it can also be daunting at times, as there isn’t a regular pay check to rely on.
On the flip side, a self-employed person has the ability to work as much or as little as she/he wants, when and where she/he wants and for whom she/he wants and that freedom is very attractive.
In a way it’s a test of character – it won’t always be easy but, there are opportunities available within Nexa to grow your own practice.
I really enjoy being part of the Nexa family, the culture here is very positive, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience among the consultants, and they are very generous in the support they offer and guidance they share with colleagues.”
