Last month we wrote about the advantages of working from home given that much of the legal world have been forced into doing so. At nexa law, many of our Consultants work from home through choice and not government advice, so we thought we’d collate some of the best tips from our Consultant Solicitors about working from home.
Here’s our Top 5 tips for working from home…
-
- Try to separate your home life from your work life by having a dedicated work space that you can leave behind at the end of the day. If that’s not possible, try to pack away your work at the end of each day so that you get some degree of separation between being at work and being at home.
- Working from home doesn’t mean that you have to be “always on” for your clients or your employer. The great thing about working from home is the flexibility, but it’s always valuable to try to have a routine. Aim to define your working hours so that you don’t end up working more hours than is healthy.
- Take regular breaks throughout the day and make sure you get up and walk around! Although working from home can allow you to build more time into your life for things like exercise, it can also reduce your activity levels when your commute is reduced to a few steps from the kitchen to the office and back again!
- Stay connected with your colleagues and your clients and take the opportunity to have a conversation instead of emailing when it’s appropriate. When you don’t leave the house for a few days, you may not get the chance to have as many conversations as usual! So when the opportunity does arise it’s worth taking it.
- Don’t be afraid to let people see or hear that sometimes life can be a little messy! There’s no need to be embarrassed by children appearing on video calls or dogs barking in the background of your conversations! Working from home doesn’t always go to plan and people are now starting to experience that for themselves.
If you’re a Solicitor you may have started to see the benefits that working from home brings. We’re facing extraordinary times which have brought with them unusual and added pressure, but in ordinary times working from home is a joy and a privilege. Our Consultants say they love the flexibility and the extra time it affords them to do the things they enjoy. Plus, it can be a much more family friendly way of working than being tied to a desk or stuck with a punishing commute.
But working from home wouldn’t be so easy without the investment we’ve made at nexa law to ensure our Solicitors have the best systems and resources. We put in place the leading case management software, secure cloud storage, a cloud telephone system and a host of other online resources. By stepping away from cumbersome technology which ties many lawyers to an office, we have ensured our solutions are fast, user-friendly and accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.
